Ania Bas

Ania Bas is an artist, writer and organiser who works across text, performance, publishing and social engagement.

Her work has been commissioned by the Tate, Whitechapel Gallery, Art on the Underground, Whitstable Biennale/Cement Fields and Coventry Biennial and she is a co-founder of The Walking Reading Group.

She is an Open School East alumna (2013- 2014) and Faber Academy alumna (2018). Through her art/writing practice she explores how narratives shape understanding and mythology of places and people. She works with text that is often constructed from or based on found narratives, gathered and gifted text. She considers her text fiction and in it explores narratives from multiple points of view, disrupting the ‘all-knowing’ narrative voice. She often plays with modes of narration. She often writes in formats that literature doesn’t embrace as ‘proper writing’ elevating forms of text creation that are present in the everyday and discarded as not worthy of keeping or reading beyond its original use, such as shopping lists, text messages and job application letters.

Her most recent piece of work is ‘ODD HOURS’ –  a debut novel published through mainstream publishing channels and available from bookshops across the country.

Currently she explores ways of writing that are a continuation of ‘Footnotes, Outdoor Activities’ – a short story and a series of instructions for a walk commissioned by Coventry Biennial in 2020 that was recently performed at University of Warwick as a part of HERE, an event that we produced while Developing Coventry Biennial 2023.

Walking, in all its forms, is an essential part of her practice and work she is developing of Coventry Biennial 2023 is inspired by protest marches.
