Join artists Katy & Rebecca Beinart for a creative writing workshop using family archives as a tool for engaging with the past, from the personal and everyday to social movements and campaigning.
The duo’s granny Margaret Stanton’s archive (housed in The Modern Records Centre) includes 100s of letters written over decades of civil rights campaigning. Taking this as a starting point, during this workshop you will draft a letter to your ancestors offering a unique opportunity to experiment with the letter-writing form while exploring the hand made qualities of much 20th century campaigning material.
This session invites you to enter into dialogue with an ancestor. Through the workshop we’ll experiment with different modes of writing and our links to ancestors – who could be someone in your known family, someone from the more distant past, or a chosen ancestor – a person you feel curious about, inspired by, or profoundly disagree with.
We encourage you to bring along materials (letters, photos, etc…) that relate to your own family’s political or civic life and activities to use as inspiration.
Please Note:
There will be a short comfort and refreshment break during this intimate event.
The space is physically accessible and all participants will be met at the entrance to the building and guided to the event space (Room 2.38).
