Partisan Social Club, On being together; memberships, collectives and unions, 2018.
Partisan Social Club (PSC) is a project initiated by artists Mel Jordan and Andy Hewitt.
For Coventry Biennial 2019 they are developing a new project called ‘The Distribution of Wealth most conducive to Human Happiness’.
The PSC develops participatory works and co-learning initiatives with members to make language-based artworks in which people publish their ideas to each other and to audiences via exhibitions and other formats, these include printed matter, objects and digital platforms.
The project involves working with existing PSC members and welcomes new, local members from Coventry’s communities, to explore ideas of labour and economy as first expressed in the writing of Irish philosopher William Thompson (1775–1833).
The expected results include several iterations of workshops where participants discuss and translate Thompson’s ideas in relation to their own experiences and viewpoints on working life, equality and happiness. This, in turn, becomes manifest as objects, texts and images, generating collective works which will be exhibited at Coventry Biennial for visitors to engage with.
Crucially, William Thompson was born and lived in Cork, one of Coventry’s twin cities.
