Moving Pictures: A Site-Specific Expanded Film Event

You are viewing an archived event. This event has already taken place.

Join us at Nanaksar Sikh Temple for Moving Pictures, a new site-specific film installation. This one-off event explores how former cinemas have been reimagined as places of worship by diaspora communities.

Created in close collaboration with the congregation, the project places lived experience at its core. A custom-designed filming and projection device captures moments of religious life from the perspective of the sangat (congregation), focusing on rhythm, ritual, and collective presence. These films are then projected back into the temple using the same device, maintaining the original scale, duration, and spatial relationships.

Following the screening, artist-filmmaker Julie Marsh and members of the congregation will lead an open panel discussion on artistic co-creation, faith, and spatial representation.

Then from 4pm onwards, once the discussion ends, you’re invited to enjoy langar-style food offered by the congregation.

The project is part of a wider research project ‘Moving Pictures: reusing cinemas as places of worship in the diaspora’ co-led by architectural historian Dr Kate Jordan.
