John Riddy is a London-based photographer who was born in Northampton and grew up in Coventry, where he completed his Foundation Course at Coventry Polytechnic (now Coventry University) in 1979/80.
Through his well-established photographic practice, he seeks to find what he describes as “both the factual and transcendent qualities of the everyday.” He often works in series dedicated to specific places, ranging from quieter corners of London to international sites that hold a particular interest for the artist.
John’s choices of format, materials and technique are intrinsic to each of his works, making the physical qualities of the final print of paramount importance to the reading of his images.
Our first activity with John is a display of images of modernist buildings and spaces taken between 1998 and 2006 at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum alongside British Art Show 10.
His recent exhibitions include John Riddy: Winter Landscape, Frith Street Gallery, London (2026); Dong Gang International Photo Festival, South Korea (2021); Seeing Past The Future, Pollock Krasner House and Study Centre, Stony Brook University, East Hampton, New York (2021); Hogarth: London Voices, London Lives, Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, London (2020) and John Riddy: Photographs, De Pont Museum, Tilburg (2019).
His works are in public and private collections around the world including both Arts Council Collection and the British Council Collection, as well Tate, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Art Institute of Chicago, De Pont Museum, Tilburg and The Government Art Collection.
