A feature in Skin Deep introduces Yinka Esi Graves by saying:
“In defiance of the haters, Yinka Esi Graves is a black-British Flamenco dancer living and working in Seville. After ten years in Spain training, Yinka’s work pushes against the boundaries of flamenco. She reflects on both her black identity and the tradition’s African roots.”
Yinka has generously offered 5 people or households the opportunity to view her work-in-progress and to join her via Zoom for an intimate discussion on the 29th June 2021.
Yinka says:
“It’s a pleasure for me to share this work-in-progress in this digital space. I understand my need to re-visit sites where we can trace the continuity of how black beingness has been made nonviable, as a way to speak to the ways in which we play with (in)visibility and camouflage as ways of existing.”
She continues:
“As this Kickstarter is working to support the ways in which we write ourselves into this realm, I hope my work can help us to further reflect on the importance of allowing black beings space and time to exist without the pressures of constantly navigating hostile environments.”
