Artspace Listing’s Commission: Natasha Brzezicki

by Ryan Hughes

Natasha Brzezicki, Untitled (Research Table), 2018

Our friends at Coventry Artspace have recently launched a listings platform to support local artists. In addition to profiling artists online the listings are designed to create new opportunities for artists in Coventry, Warwickshire and the West Midlands.

On Friday 26th April we spent several hours looking through the listings, following the links which artists had provided and investigating some of the best artwork’s being made locally with the aim of commissioning a new work for Coventry Biennial 2019 in partnership with Artspace.

We were excited to discover Natasha Brzezicki, who had graduated from Coventry University before temporarily moving to Stoke-on-Trent to undertake a residency with Airspace.

Now living back in Coventry she tells us:

My practice considers our relationship to the environment and ideas of translation. Often taking the form of sound recordings, text or video documentation and the use of natural collected materials.

While at Airspace she produced outstanding works including plant dyed blankets, sheet music of birdsong and collections of found objects. Her exhibition at the end of that residency simultaneously referenced nature and the museum, celebrating the best of both environments.

Upon receiving the Coventry Biennial 2019 commission she said:

I’m so happy to have received this commission and I’m looking forward to being involved in the second Coventry Biennial. The opportunity will allow me to reconsider some of the materials, thoughts and processes I began working with during my graduate residency at Airspace Gallery last year.

We’ll be adding more information about Natasha’s commission to our website over the coming weeks and months, you’ll also be able to find out more about her practice and this project in particular on the Artspace website soon.
