The Phoenix and The City: Duncan Whitley in residence at Coventry University
Duncan has begun capturing sound and video of new developments around Coventry.
We maintain a close relationship with Coventry University, they are a key supporter of our work and we are excited to be continuing, and building upon that relationship through embedding artist Duncan Whitley within their School of Media and Performing Arts.
From earlier this month through until the end of 2020 he will be in residence in the school as he works towards a new moving image work which we will present as a part of the third Coventry Biennial in 2021.
The first phase of this residency is generously supported through Arts Council England’s Developing your Creative Practice programme.
This residency will focus on research, development and production of the new project which Duncan is calling Phoenix City 2021. Bringing together elements of speculative or science fiction with documentary practices and a commitment to social engagement, Duncan explains that the project will:
examine Coventry’s relationship to the image of the phoenix, an image which has often been used to represent the city since the 1950’s. The work will additionally present the hypothesis that City of Culture is conceived in Coventry’s collective unconscious as the city’s next phoenix moment
More information on Duncan’s residency and an event he is producing for Coventry Biennial 2019 will be announced soon.
