Minton Robot – Kickstarter reward update
by Ryan Hughes
We’ve worked closely with Simon Poulter a lot over the past 18 months. He produced an event at the inaugural Coventry Biennial in partnership with New Art West Midlands and Ryan, our Artistic Director has spoken at several conferences which he has organised – most recently during an event at the Transport Museum with the brilliant Images&Co.
He has a good understanding of what Coventry Biennial is trying to achieve. It was particularly wonderful to be able to work with him as we undertook an intensive period of organisational development earlier this year. He helped with recruiting our advisory board and writing our business plan among the many other relatively dull tasks involved in setting up a business.
The reason that he gets what we are trying to do at such an intrinsic level is that he is an artist.
His practice frequently intersects with technology and play. He recently spoke about Fortnite: Battle Royale as a space which provides similar experiences to other, more traditionally (counter-)cultural spaces. He has made watercolour paintings based on 360° photographs and has curated exhibitions at venues including Midlands Arts Centre and FACT in Liverpool.
Due to this particularly close relationship, we are delighted to be offering limited edition risograph prints which he has produced as a reward for our current crowdfunding campaign. Money raised through our current campaign will fund a series of commissions by artists from Coventry and Warwickshire as a part of Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art 2019.
Simon’s prints, in 2 colours on a heavy A3 cream paper, depict a toy robot from the 1950s enmeshed in a ‘minton tile’ styled pattern from the 1850s. This is typical of his practice, it brings together disparate elements in a playful yet beautiful way.
We have made 10 of these prints available, and at the time of writing only one has been snapped up meaning that there is plenty of opportunity for you to have one of these beautiful prints hanging in your house! Simon’s prints are listed at £20 and our Kickstarter runs until Saturday 6 October.
